NaturalAreaRugs Nirvana Natural Sisal Binding Rug, Fudge, 3' x 5'
The kind folks at Natural Area Rugs provided me with this Nirvana Natural Sisal Binding Rug (color: Fudge, size: 3' x 5') in exchange for sharing my unbiased review...
Sisal is made from the Sisalana plant (or the agave plant). I wasn't initially sure about ordering this rug, although I know it is known to be very durable, I wasn't too crazy about the checkered pattern. It's actually the toughest of all the natural fibers.
After reading more about it, I was hoping to get it in the 8x10 size, for use in our living room. Of course I had to ask why it's $800+ (in that size) and was told that it's because this is handmade, here in the USA. Upon arrival, I can better understand it's value as it is substantial.
It does well in humid environments because it's very absorbent. If that's the case where you live, that might be a deciding factor because it can actually help cool down the room it's in. A nice feature, in my opinion! It's also said to be naturally flame retardant.
It is, however, coarse on the feet and it stains easily if you get a wet stain on it. We decided to put it in our hallway for this reason, apposed to the entry or kitchen. I've read that stain removers can damage the organic fibers this is made of.
The best way to care for this is by dry vacuuming it. If you do spill something on it, you want to dab up any liquids and use a hairdryer to dry it as quickly as possible.
The natural fibers really do go with any decor and even with the checkered pattern, it doesn't overpower anything else we have going on around it (we have other floor coverings in the same hallway, with this one in between).
We've had this for over a month now and it's holding up beautifully. It opened up smelling a bit like a new pair of shoes but the scent dissipated overnight and wasn't too strong.
My favorite feature is that it hasn't once budged since the moment we layed it down. The backing is heavy so we didn't have to wait for any curled edges to settle and it doesn't move around at all on our hardwood floors.
It's thick but we don't trip over it because the edges taper nicely. We've received compliments on it from friends and family. It's definitely a quality piece.
I'd say it's a 5 star product except that ours arrived with a very small puncture in the backing. It's not visible from the front (or deep enough that I'm concerned it might later be visible through the top) but worth mentioning.
The way it was rolled (with the backing rolled on the inside), I'd think this happened prior to it being shipped. I did not contact the seller about it since it's not visible from the top and it is a tiny imperfection.
That aside, this is a gorgeous rug that I'd recommend to others. Uploading some photos so you can get a closer look and see what I mean. Smile. Hope this is helpful!
